A JAX grease cartridge does not open the way a Castrol one does. The plastic end cap is pressed in tight under the rim, and pushing on its face just seats it harder. Prise at it with a screwdriver and you put plastic shards in the grease. The right way takes about thirty seconds and no tools.
The cap cannot be pulled or levered out cleanly. What releases it is a knock to the rim, repeated around the full circumference, so the seal lets go evenly instead of tearing at one point.
The technique
- Hold the cartridge almost flat, a little under level, with the capped end over the edge of the bench.
- Knock the edge of the rim on the bench. Firm taps, not a slam.
- Turn the cartridge a little between each knock, so every tap works a fresh part of the rim.
- After a full turn the seal has let go, and the cap lifts straight off, flat and intact.
Under the cap is food grade grease, ready to load.
Why it is worth doing properly
JAX food grade greases go into plants where nothing from the packaging can end up in the product. A cap that has been prised off with a screwdriver leaves plastic shards and burrs at the mouth of the tube, and those can find their way into the grease and through to whatever it is protecting. A clean open keeps the cap intact too, so a part used cartridge can be capped again.
